While watching various US TV shows about newborn babies in hospital, we noticed they put a KY jelly type liquid onto the babies eyes. anyone know why they do this?Why do they put a ky jelly type liquid on newborn babies eye lids in the US?
Women with infections of gonorrhea or chlamydia can pass the infection to their baby as the baby passes through the birth canal. To prevent the baby from becoming infected, an antibiotic ointment or Silver Nitrate jelly is placed in the eyes. In many communities, mothers are tested for these conditions early in pregnancy, however public health law dictates that every baby receive this eye treatment (including babies born by cesarean).

Some experts feel the administration of antibiotics to every newborn is unsafe. Other experts express concern that the antibiotic ointment blurs the vision of the baby, making it difficult for the mother and baby to bond. Depending on the laws of your community you may be able to refuse this treatment or delay if for two hours.Why do they put a ky jelly type liquid on newborn babies eye lids in the US?
It isn't KY jelly, it's an antibiotic thing to prevent the babies eyes from becoming infected from something they may have encountered on the way down.

My friend had her baby at home and declined the drops and her newborn had pus-ey leaky eyes for weeks. Was icky.
I am not certain - but I think it is an antibiotic which protect against syphilis. I think this is standard operating procedure as it prevents blindness and the downsides are minimal.
LMAO KY Jelly!~!~!~

';Eye drops or ointment containing an antibiotic medication are placed in a newborn's eyes after birth. This is required by law to protect the baby from an unknown gonorrhea infection in the mother's body. Antibiotics are used in most hospitals. Another preparation, called silver nitrate, is sometimes used.';
it's vaseline - it helps prevent eye infections.
babies eyeducts are not yet opened. the babie is use to being surrounded by fluids. in duing this it helps the eyes to stay moistened.

Its probably an antibiotic of sorts when they are first born. NOT KY
It's an antibiotic ointment that they do as a routine procedure. The only real reason to have it is if mom has STD's, so if you know you're clean, go ahead and refuse it!
Thx for asking this curious we watch them too and always wondered this, so why dont we do it then?
